archives centre and museum space

Recognised as a private archives centre by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and a museum space, the Mundaneum preserves and enhances over 6 km of documents! Recognised in the UNESCO Memory of the World programme and the European Heritage Label, it presents itself as a place of reflexion based on the ideological and historical legacy of its founders: the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Henri La Fontaine and the father of documentary science, Paul Otlet.

— Museum space

A space for reflexion around humanist values

The Mundaneum offers original exhibitions, primarily aiming to highlight the collections of the archival centre. The themes of these exhibitions resonate with the major themes of the institution’s history since its creation. These exhibitions are part of a constant dialogue between History and current events.

6 kilometres of archives, the world at your fingertips

The Mundaneum aims to preserve, conserve, and enhance its collections through exhibitions, scientific work, publications, symposiums, and conferences, …

By the encyclopaedic will of its founders to gather all the knowledge of the world, a researcher can potentially find everything on any subject. The main archival funds deal with pacifism, feminism, and anarchism.

— The web time forgot

A unique place between past and present

The building that houses the archival centre and museum space is of Art Deco style. In 1998, for the opening of the museum space, the Mundaneum entrusted the scenography to Benoit Peeters and François Schuiten. As comic book authors, they were able to immerse visitors in a unique Mundaneum atmosphere.

This place has become the ideal setting to host the valorization activities, exhibitions, and conferences of the Mundaneum.
