Discover Shades of Black, the Mundaneum exhibition on the history and ideas of anarchism: archives, posters, social struggles, and reflections on autonomy, equality, and living together.
Since its emergence in the 19th century, anarchism has inspired both fascination and misunderstanding. Often associated with violence or chaos, its history and the ideas it promotes are, however, far richer and more nuanced than they are commonly perceived to be.
With Shades of Black, the Mundaneum invites visitors to move beyond these clichés and discover the ideas, struggles and utopian visions carried by anarchist women and men. Far from simply rejecting the state, authority in all its forms, or capitalism, they also imagined new ways of living together based on autonomy, equality, solidarity, free education and collective organisation.
The anarchist movement took many different forms and found expression within working-class, intellectual and artistic circles alike. Whether individualist, syndicalist or communist, anarchists often stood at the forefront of social debates surrounding women’s emancipation, contraception, criticism of capitalism, ecology, vegetarianism, free education and freedom of thought.
In a world marked by inequality, ecological crises, wars and growing distrust in institutions, these ideas are enjoying a resurgence. They challenge us to rethink power, freedom and collective life within contemporary society. Today, the ways of life and forms of social organisation advocated by anarchists continue to inspire numerous initiatives and struggles.
Conceived as an immersive journey into anarchist cultures, the exhibition brings together militant posters, photographs, newspapers, archives, pamphlets, punk records and slogans. Through a deliberately vibrant and abundant scenography — featuring graffiti-covered walls, striking imagery and objects of protest — Shades of Black – Anarchist Histories and Ideas presents anarchism as a living, embodied movement that remains constantly in motion.

An exhibition by the Mundaneum and the Institut d’histoire ouvrière, économique et sociale (IHOES), in collaboration with the Centre d’histoire et de sociologie des gauches (CHSG) at ULB.
